Reviving Oriental Wisdom in Modern Design: Hongyang Kaisa Riverside Mansion

Sun Xiang's Award-Winning Design Merges Traditional Jiangnan Architecture with Modern Techniques

The Hongyang Kaisa Riverside Mansion, a sales center in Nanjing, China, is a testament to the city's vibrant history and cultural richness. Known as Jinling in ancient times, Nanjing served as the capital of six dynasties and the thriving, prosperous capital of the Republic of China in modern times. Today, it stands as a modern city of diversification and tolerance, its profound historical and cultural heritage providing a wellspring of inspiration for Sun Xiang's design.

The design's unique properties lie in its theme, "Four Waters Returning to the Hall". This concept signifies the unity of heaven and man, a philosophical thought deeply rooted in Chinese culture. The rainwater measuring the slope on the roof flows from all sides into the patio, symbolizing the gathering of the heart of heaven. This design, expressed through modern techniques, showcases oriental wisdom while creating an experience filled with traditional memories.

Various materials were utilized in the realization of this design. The Chinese-flavored metal grid, glass bricks, matte and smooth stones, and the glass curtain wall all contribute to the unique spatial expression. The sun shining through the skylight presents a rich light and shadow effect at different times of the day, further enhancing the space's aura and charm.

The project, which spans 697 square meters, was completed within a short timeframe from September to November 2019. The main challenge was to present oriental wisdom using modern techniques and to create an experience reminiscent of traditional Jiangnan houses' sequential roof technique.

Despite these challenges, the Hongyang Kaisa Riverside Mansion stands as a testament to Sun Xiang's ability to blend tradition with modernity. This design, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021, is a top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable design that showcases outstanding expertise and innovation. It is admired for its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
